If you’re a fan of tennis, you’ll be happy to know that Florida is home to more than 7,000 places to play tennnis according to Frommers. In fact, many professional tennis tournaments are held in Florida each year, including the Miami Open and the Delray Beach Open. And if you like playing tennis yourself, you can always enjoy a friendly game with neighbors at communities like Royal Harbor and Del Webb Bexley, or take a lesson or two to improve your skills.

Did you know that Florida is one of the best states in the country for bird-watching? With more than 500 species of birds, including pelicans, eagles, and indigo buntings, there’s plenty of avian action to be had. In fact, many retirees and active adults have taken up bird-watching as a hobby in recent years - Royal Highlands is set upon plenty of conservation where you're sure to see some birds flying around. Take a hike!
With the cooler temperatures and lower humidity, winter is the perfect time to explore one of Florida's many nature trails. whether you're in the Panhandle or down in South Florida, you're sure to find a trail that's perfect for you. And who knows? You might even spot a manatee or an alligator along the way. Ross Prairie State Forest in Ocala, Florida surrounds Spruce Creek Preserve on three sides and has plenty of nature trails for you to enjoy.
Visit a theme park!
Florida is home to some of the best theme parks in the world, and there's no better time to visit than during the winter months. Disney is just a 10 minute drive from K. Hovnanian's Four Seasons at Orlando and it's a quick trip to Universal too! When the crowds die down and the temperatures drop, you can enjoy all your favorite rides and attractions without having to wait in line for hours on end. Just be sure to bring a jacket—it can get chilly at night!
Explore a farmer's market!
Farmer's markets are another one of our favorite winter activities in Florida and are plentiful throughout the state. Take advantage of this abundance at communities like On Top of the World and The Villages by picking up some fresh oranges or grapefruits - citrus is in season during the winter months! You'll be glad you did when summer rolls around and everyone else is paying top dollar for store-bought juice that just doesn't taste as good.

Tampa Bay’s Festival of Lights & Santa’s Village - If you love twinkling lights, then you won’t want to miss Tampa Bay’s Festival of Lights. This event features a two-mile drive of millions of lights and is $25/car to attend. You can also enjoy festive food and drinks, entertainment, and more. The festival runs from November 24th through January 1st.
St. Augustine’s Nights of Lights - Explore downtown St. Augustine while it is dressed in it’s holiday best adorned with sparkling lights. This event takes place from November 19th to January 31st beginning at sundown. They even offer free shuttle rides so you won't have to walk too far to enjoy the holiday cheer.
33rd Annual Light Up Clermont - Check out quaint Clermont for some more winter fun. Light up Clermont’s theme this year is Claus in Clermont. This year features a tree lighting ceremony, parade, holiday treats fit for Santa himself, and an Enchanted Forest. These events take place throughout December to get you into the Christmas spirit!
Christmas on Third - Enjoy a festive evening out with friends at Christmas on Third in Naples. This annual event features live music, ice sculptures, a holiday market, and even snow. You can also enjoy food and drinks from local vendors while you shop for unique gifts for your loved ones. Christmas on Third takes place throughout December, you can even bring your pets along on select nights to get their very own pic with Santa paws.
Florida may be best known for its beaches and warm weather, but there's so much more to this state than that. No matter what type of activities you enjoy, there’s sure to be something for everyone.
